Visual Merchandising, in a retail environment, is the more
modern term for what was once called Window Dressers. Realising that these
‘window dressers were not only responsible for dressing windows but for
everything you can literally see within the confines of the store, the name
went through many changes.
In my years of personal experience my job description was a
Display Artist, Visual Artist and finally Visual Merchandiser. The Visual
Merchandiser name change also meant added responsibilities to the job, the most
significant of these was the inclusion of merchandising the various product
within their departments in the store.
Ø
Store Windows and implementation thereof
Ø
Signage and overall store marketing
Ø
Ensuring all store visuals are up to date
Ø
Promotional Implementation
Ø
Store and departmental merchandising
Ø
Seasonal Layouts
Ø
Christmas Decor implementation
Ø
Mall Centre Courts
Ø
Store Events Marketing
I could literally go on and on about the various job
functions of a Visual Merchandiser and ultimately it is the type of business
that defines the responsibilities of the Visual Merchandiser. Example – A
visual merchandiser in a furniture store may have a different job description
to that of one in a jewellery store and even that of a big department store.
It is vitally important to note that the Visual Merchandiser
plays a very important role in the day to day running of the store by ensuring
that all visuals, signage and merchandising are correct and up to date and that
the store is ready for trade to customers both internal and external.
